José Lopes Amaral is a distinguished photographer with a robust background in photo and video journalism. In 2019, he gained recognition for his courageous actions during the Hong Kong protests, where he stood alone against a brigade of the Hong Kong Police Force to protect fellow journalists from being shot with rubber bullets and pepper spray rounds.

Originally rooted in visual communication and window display design, Amaral transitioned into photojournalism in 2009, capturing narratives within the Portuguese community in Luxembourg. His relocation to Asia in 2013 and subsequent expansion into video journalism in 2016 marked significant milestones in his career.

In 2023, Amaral shifted his focus toward documentary projects, concentrating on social issues, environmental concerns, and other pressing topics. His work now aims to bring attention to underreported stories and amplify marginalized voices through his dedicated storytelling.
