Taiwan Video Journalist Jose Lopes Amaral.jpg

Jose Lopes Amaral's professional journey, evolving from Visual Communication and Window Display Design to Photojournalism, and ultimately to impactful documentary projects, represents a profound transformation in both his career trajectory and personal values.

Emerging from a background in design and window display, Amaral's transition to Photojournalism in 2009, notably within the Portuguese community in Luxembourg, marked the initiation of his exploration into the narrative potential of visual storytelling. However, it was his relocation to Asia in 2013 that completely immersed him in the realms of Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.

The expansion into Video Journalism in 2016 added another dimension to his storytelling prowess. Amaral's role as a freelance Videojournalist with esteemed news agencies like Anadolu Agency, A24, Ruptly TV, AlaNews, and others not only underscores his versatility but also highlights his recognition within the industry.

The pivotal moment in his career materialized in 2023 when he made the decision to retire from Photo and Video journalism. This choice stemmed from a fundamental misalignment of his beliefs with the nature of the news media business, reflecting his discomfort with propagating narratives that contradicted his values.

Post-retirement, Amaral redirected his focus towards meaningful documentary projects aligned with his deeply held beliefs. His commitment to documenting crucial topics, ranging from human rights issues, social challenges, civil unrest, to animal rights, environmental concerns, and natural disasters, underscores his dedication to shedding light on pressing matters often overlooked by mainstream media.

By dedicating himself to projects that personally resonate with him, Jose Lopes Amaral has found a way to leverage his skills and passion for visual storytelling. This shift in focus aims to bring attention to important stories that may not align with traditional news media narratives. His work now serves as a platform to amplify voices and raise awareness about issues he believes require attention and understanding from a broader audience.

In addition to these projects, Jose founded the Visual Content Agency "Studio 279" and initiated collaborations with companies promoting outdoor activities, such as the bikepacking and hiking industry. In this capacity, he creates visual content through Graphic Design, Photo- and Videography, further expanding the reach and impact of his storytelling beyond traditional media channels.
